I would not live there by choice, but...
...like I said before, most other people would be fine there, and I still agree with epi's suggestion. I do think like Beacon Hill, it's one of those neighborhoods where it depends which block you live. Best to visit first, IMO. Ballard historiy has been the Scandinavian neighborhood, so that's your answer as far as diversity goes. ;-( It's not x% white of course, but Seattle overall I think is pretty segregated. King County is statistiy supposed to be the most diverse county in the country, but it works in separate patches. If the diversity is important to you, Columbia City, Beacon Hill and the Central District are also residential options. All three of those neighborhoods have queer presences, I'm totally comfortable in any of them, but that's part of my growing up too. People say the crime is higher, and that's probably true, but none of it looks unsafe to me coming from NYC.
